When you check the travel guides and website related to Chiang Rai, they normally use the “Clock Tower” as the guide of distance. For example, “the restaurant is just 10 minutes walk from the clock tower”. To be honest, the clock tower it’s not exactly a must-see but it still draws quite a gathering of visitors and is an interesting addition to the city’s central landmark.
If you have already visited to the White Temple, you will not be surprised to see similar design on the Chiang Rai’s Golden Clock Tower where Phaholyothin Road and Banpaprakan Road meet. Yes, the White Temple and clock tower were designed by the same person, Mr. Chalermchai Khositpipat.
The Clcok Tower was built in 2008 to honour His Majesty King Bhumibhol Adulyadej, the clock tower has same distinctive architectural style from the White Temple. of Mr. The clock tower serves as a traffic roundabout and whilst it is distinctive enough during the day, the structure and setting takes on a whole new quality when it is lit up in the evening.
During the day, the clock tower looks quite dull with unattractive golden color and massive in size. The decorations to the clock tower are places for 100 meter or so down each road that reaches the clock tower too. It really stands out that’s for sure. At night time though, it is a whole different story – this is time when the Clock Tower really shows itself off. The way the lights shine on the tower is just beautiful.
Here what makes the clock tower famous. At 7pm, 8pm, and 9pm every day, for 10 minutes each time, the clock tower turns into a masterpiece, a light-and-sound display. You will hear music piping out of somewhere in the tower, parts of the monument move, lights do lovely things. If you see it yourself, you will agree that it is a totally remarkable piece of work. There the laser lights with musical accompaniment make for a surreal night-time scene as pick-up trucks, tuk-tuks and motorbikes continue to buzz around the golden clock tower.

The Chiang Rai clocktower is located where Thanon Jet Yot meets Thanon Baanpa Pragarn. Look out too for the elaborate gilded street lights which line Baanpa Pragarn road on either side of the clock tower.
